Should I even write this blog ??
Should I hold back or be 100% honest ??
Should I worry about upsetting the reader / fans ??
After thinking about it for a long time I feel I NEED to write this blog to get it off my chest so here it goes, If I upset any of my fans or the horror community it's not my intention.
The two BIGGEST things I hear from fans is "When are we going to see something NEW" and "When are we going to get an ORIGINAL Idea" the answer is simple YOU AREN'T !
There is no such thing as "New" and "Original" in the film industry or ANY industry for that matter, think about it for a minute Friday The 13th came out because Sean S. Cunningham saw that Halloween was making a ton of money and he said to Victor Miller Let's rip it off ! They did and made a ton of money with Friday The 13th.
Everything takes from something that came before it movies, music, tv shows etc. You know the old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and this doesn't apply to the horror genre, lets talk about comic book hero's for a moment DC and Marvel have alot of characters that mirror each other here are five examples the come to mind.
Green Arrow & Hawkeye
The Inhumans & The X-Men
Bullseye & Deadshot
Ripclaw & Wolverine
Deadpool & DeathStroke
So maybe we shouldn't be asking to get something "new" and "original" but ask for stories to be told better, to be better written, to have better effects, I know fans who only go to movies for the effects and don't care about anything else. I don't understand those type of fans but then again I'm a writer / director so I look at the whole picture.
I have been 100% honest with fans that Sins of Man Rise of Mortis has elements of Friday The 13th, Halloween, Prom Night (08) and Scream in it, not because I wanted to "rip them off" but because elements of those stories can be found in EVERY slasher movie I pay respect to several movies, actors, directors, and horror locations in this movie because I'm a firm believer in showing appreciation and respect to those that came before me and honoring their work.
Now I want to finish this blog with something that I get asked alot (almost on a daily basis) what is the one thing that you have to do when writing that you don't like doing?
Now the sarcastic answer I give is I hate having to take pee breaks when writing because I don't like to be bothered while working. The truthful answer is I really dislike having to kill people, now before I continue I want you to let that sink in for a moment. I'm a horror writer / director who doesn't like to kill people, some would say "You're in the wrong genre pal" .
Allow me to explain and I'm sure that I'm not the only one who feels like this. I don't like killing off the established characters in my scripts / stories I mean we all write characters that we intend to kill. (I call them fillers)
I'm talking about when Freddy killed Nancy, When Michael killed Laurie those are hard things to do because people associate those movies with those iconic characters, with that said I'm NOT calling my characters Iconic, I'm brash but I'm not an asshole. Could Mortis become an Icon, Maybe.
When I was working on the final draft of Sins of Man II I started thinking about possibly killing off a Main character, what made me start thinking about it was the Scream franchise and how Sidney, Gale, Dewey and Randy survived. and they killed Randy off in Scream 2, and had Sidney, Gale and Dewey survived through the remainder of the series.
I have finally come to grips with why Randy had to die in Scream 2, I get it now it's the same thing with Nancy dying in Dream Warriors it HAD to happen because ANYONE can die in a sequel they had to establish that and they picked a loved character to make the example.
When I was writing Rise of Mortis I knew based on the characters names who was going to die and who would live to see Sins of Man II. When I was working on the Final draft of Sins of Man II I wasn't sure if I wanted to kill off an main character or not or wait til the finale of the trilogy to slaughter some main characters... You'll have to wait and see ..
In closing, I hope you have enjoyed this blog and aren't too offended, it's just how I feel about things .
STAY TUNED & STAY WICKED !!!
