I got this question in an email today and it's one I have been getting a lot lately so I went to people and asked what they thought of the movie not really a review I have gotten e-mails from people who has seen the movie and had comments or questions about why I would do something on screen that might not make sense to them.
Those e-mails have been 95% good I would even say 98%, I have had a few people comment about the use of foul language specifically the word "fuck" and all I will say is that word is a word that I use often, not saying its right or wrong but it fits most situations and honestly if that is a fans biggest complaint about the movie then I'm a happy film maker.
As far as "trolls" and negative fans I look a it this way, if you're a fan of horror movies and bought a copy of Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis and have a complaint it's your right to get online and voice your concerns, I myself complain about horror movies however I also am of the opinion that if you don't have anything nice to say you shouldn't say anything at all.
I have received many negative comments via e-mail and most of them I laugh off because it's a case of "sour grapes" meaning these trolls are simply pissed off because I went out and did exactly what I said I was going to do and they are still sitting on their ass doing nothing.
I took a leap of faith in my ability as a writer / director / producer and quit my retail job a few years ago with no backup plan at all, not many people would do something crazy like that but I did and I think that pisses alot of you off to no end but what I think is even worse is that I did it on NO BUDGET and was able to do some pretty cool things with it.
There are going to be negative people no matter what you do and they will be negative for any number of reasons and in some ways I don't blame them for their negativity and in other ways if you aren't happy with your situation in life YOU have to change it, if I can do it so can you, it's really that simple. You have to find what you're passionate about, whatever makes you happy and take a leap of faith in your ability to make it happen.
QUESTION : Do Negative "Fans" And "Trolls" Motivate Me ?
This question is tough to answer it's yes and no, Yes they motivate me to be a better writer and director but I don't dislike these people for having an opinion and for the most part when a negative person e-mails me I skim through the message and move on to the next. If the person has actually seen the movie and has questions I will usually answer them the people who haven't seen the movie and just attack it because they can get ignored quickly.
The reason I say No they don't motivate me is because I don't take what they say to heart, I don't feed trolls for the most part.
A perfect example is I had a fan friend me on facebook and he wanted to pick my brain on is fan fiction he was working on, he was writing a book based on the Halloween film franchise, which he has no legal right to touch because he doesn't own the property dimension films I believe still holds the rights to it but I guess that's neither here nor there. I'm thankful to the people that helped me along the way and have made it a goal of mine to always help people when I can weather its with their writing, directing, getting actors whatever the case might be I had ALOT of help getting my company and move off the ground and will always help people when I can and that's why I started to help this kid.
He was telling me his basic story and what parts of the series he was going to honor and what parts he was going to leave out and my first thought was "Why not just pick a point in the series and jump off from there" he was making it more complicated then it has to be. I kept giving him suggestions and he was like "I want to do this or that" so I would give more ideas and he always had and excuse why he didn't like my idea, so finally I asked him why he even wanted my advice if he wasn't going to use it? he said because I know the series so well he wanted to pick my brain finally I gave him the advice that Todd Farmer (Writer of Jason X and My Bloody Valentine) gave me after I wrote my only fan fiction piece ever a script for H3 I asked him where I should send it to be considered for filming and he said "Don't send it anywhere, it's not your story to tell, write your own script, tell your own story it will serve you better" I took that advice and make Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis. He ended up getting pissed at me and kicking me out of his facebook group and blocking me, which is perfectly fine with me. I'm not a person who writes fan fiction I write scripts that I will turn into movies fan fiction is fine for most people but not for me. if you write fan fiction good for you that is your creative outlet, while you're doing that I will continue to write, direct and produce films for my company.
STAY TUNED & STAY WICKED :)
