By : Jamie Santamore I read a story on Facebook today about a relationship Ryan Reynolds yes Deadpool himself formed with a young Cancer patient named Connor Mcgrath who lost his battle two nights ago this is what Ryan Reynolds wrote on Facebook .... For three straight years, my friend, Connor McGrath drop-kicked cancer... Not sure how... Maybe the cancer cheated... But the fight came to an end two nights ago. In my wildest dreams, I can't imagine how hard this is for his parents Kim and Gerald - along with his extended family in Newfoundland. Connor was 13. But this kid... He was smart. He was funny. And not just funny 'for a kid' - or funny 'for a person battling something awful'. He was unqualified funny. He had that... thing. That thing you see in great performers or comedy writers. A running commentary/observational skill people are just lucky to be born with. He went way too early and it's impossible to reconcile. Connor was a great friend, a great son, and a light to the people lucky enough to know him. While repeatedly punching cancer in the balls, he made everyone laugh. Including the entire staff who cared for him at Edmonton's Stollery Children's Hospital. It was the Make-A-Wish Foundation that brought us together. I can't thank them enough. Seriously. Thank you. Because of his wish, Connor was the first person to see Deadpool. I traveled up to Edmonton, Alberta to surprise him with a rough cut of the film. There were still huge sections with wires we hadn't yet painted out, jokes which weren't working (and still aren't) and green screens. Connor didn't seem to mind. And I'd never felt luckier to get to be Wade Wilson. ***Before you jump down my throat for showing a 13 year old an R-Rated film, please know this kid knew more swear words than a British chef. I went back to Edmonton 6 weeks later and I wish I could say things were looking up. After my visit, I didn't know if I was saying goodbye or see ya later. Sitting here now, I realize it was both. I'm grateful I got to orbit Connor's world for a brief time. Grateful for the pages and pages of hilarious texts between us. Grateful to his parents for allowing Connor to spend time with a foul-mouthed child in the body of a 39 year old. I called Connor, "Bubba". And he called me "Bubba2". We met because he loved Deadpool. In a certain sense he WAS Deadpool. Or, at least everything Deadpool aspires to be; balancing pain, fearlessness, love and a filthy (filthy!) sense of humor in one body. I wish he could've stuck around a lot longer. If you'd like to donate to The Make-A-Wish Foundation, I can pretty much guarantee, your money's going to a damn good place. These people do not suck. They are heroic. Full stop. http://makeawishna.ca/wishes/donate My deepest condolences and thanks to Kim, Gerald and the entire clan McGrath -- who loved this little boy so very well. And thankfully, Connor knew it. See ya down the road, Bubba. - r If that message doesn't put a tear in your eye for a number of reasons I don't know what will... This got me thinking about the importance we put on being "famous" and the pressure we put on these people and how some of us have NEVER forgotten where we came from .
As my star rises and my fame widens I am reminded almost daily to always stay humble and remain true to myself because fame is a monster and can take a person over quickly . I hope to be someone's make a wish some day that would be an awesome honor ! When I launch my next campaign for Sins of Man II : Vengeance I will donate a portion of the funds raised to the Make A Wish foundation because they do amazing work and need the support . This story has touched me so deeply that from this point forward with EVERY Campaign Wicked Carnival Productions runs we will donate a portion of the funds raised to a selected Charity . I support many charities so the charity will change with each Campaign . I want to GIVE BACK to people because it's the right thing to do and it's celebrities like Ryan Reynolds that I look up to because they care about people and I think he would even if he wasn't an international film star, maybe it's the Canadian in him something we share is being Canadian (my Great (Great) Grandparents) I know he'll never read this blog but THANK YOU RYAN REYNOLDS for showing the world that celebrities like yourself have a heart and care about people . Reading this story has changed my life for the better and no matter how famous I become (or if I never become famous) I will always remember to GIVE BACK because it's the right thing to do . I hand out meals during the summer to kids in my area through the local community center and that is how I currently give back to my community I want to start to do more in my community and beyond . STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) By : Jamie Santamore Well our Indiegogo.com campaign ended at Midnight last night and we raised a whopping $230.00 to make Sins of Man II : Vengeance which is well below the goal that was set of $7,000 . This is now the FIFTH campaign I have run since starting Wicked Carnival Productions, notice how I didn't say "failed campaign" because this has been the most successful campaign we have ever run and although we didn't reach our goal we are gaining more support every time we do this which tells me we much be doing something right !
Now comes the part where we have to go through the script and change anything that will be too expensive to do with out the money to do it, I hate doing this part of the job because worked hard to get the script the way it is and now because of funding I can't do all the cool things I wanted to do .... Ths s the point when most people shut down because you can't make a movie with out money, right ? WRONG ! you simply have to make the best of a bad situation and work together through all the mud and muck and in the end you will have a finished film to show the world ! Folks I'm 37 years old and I have never quit at anything and I'm sure as hell not going to start now ! I have an AMAZING CAST & CREW on this project who all want to see it happen and are just as excited to start shooting THIS SUNDAY as I am ! When most people feel defeated and would toss in the towel and quit that's when Wicked Carnival Productions gets up, kicks the door in and says Oh No You Didn't ! Wicked Carnival Productions FINISHES Projects when the chips are down and it looks like the end we just keep on pushing forward until the movie is finished and out on DVD for horror fans to enjoy :) Our fans are very important to us and our success as an indie film company, we need fans to purchase our movies on DVD, to want to meet us at our appearances etc. because without the fans we are just a bunch of people making movies . STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) By : Jamie Santamore We are six days away from the start of production on our second film Sins of Man II : Vengeance and there are things that continue to pop up that aren't big issues but should some how be taken care at this point ... Things like having a date for an actress to shoot her scenes for the movie (she's a very busy actress so planning is tricky) or the fact that we are short a shooting location and might have to get creative with using a single location as two .
I know I can shoot this movie in the amount of time I have to shoot it but it's gong to take some team work to pull it off . The script is tight, the story works and the characters are solid it's just getting it all to come together the way it's supposed to that is the trick . When I think about how far we have come and the cast we have assembled I know we can do this and all the little things that pop up are just that little issues that can be solved with a little bit of thinking and working together to come up with a solution . I have learned from the first film to now that there isn't a lot of issues that can be worked out with help and a good brain storming session . Chris and I have come up with some pretty cool little tricks for this movie that I think fans will get into :) We have some cool things that are fresh and exciting in the genre that will catch you off guard (hopefully) I want people to know that we will bring you a film that will shock and amaze you from beginning to end and when the end credits roll my hope is that you will be excited by the fact that Sins of Man III : Tribulation is potentially only a year away ... We might hold off on completing the trilogy and make you all wait a year while we work on a different project .. I haven't decided yet . It's one of the joy's I have of being my own boss, I can make decisions and change my mind if I want too. I decide when projects come move from script to screen because I write them and direct them and usually do the makeup FX and act in them too . On one hand I want to finish up the Sins of Man trilogy and then move onto something else completely different . Yet on the other hand I think it might be more effective to wait a year to shot and release Sins of Man III : Tribulation while we shoot and release something else . I would love to get YOUR thoughts on this do you want to see the conclusion of the Sins of Man Trilogy or do you want to see something different from us at Wicked Carnival Productions ?? There is no shortage of scripts kickin' around my office I have plenty to choice from shoot me an email and tell me what you think ... As we embark on this journey of making Sins of Man II : Vengeance I'm nervous, scared, excited, happy, anxious and just bundle of emotions but I'm in a better place then I was a year ago when all this started with Sins of Man : Rise of Morits ... Stay Tuned !! STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) By : Jamie Santamore Everyone has an ego about something and it's both helpful and hurtful in many ways I'm a screenwriter with ONE movie under my belt with the next one starting production in a week do I have an ego about it ?? Not at all and I will tell you why because in the BIG, GIANT, HUGE picture of things I'm nothing special and I know it . I have written 15 or 20 screenplays that are almost all ready to be shot do I have an ego about it ? No because I haven't done anything but put words on paper and ANYONE can do that, right ? Does my public persona have an ego ? Yes because that is what the public expects from me when I'm at an event they want to see the Character come out in me . Do I know how to turn it off and on, of course I do because my wife wouldn't stand for public persona Jamie in her house for very long . Can I turn on the public persona at the drop of a hat, yes because I get asked to talk shop, sign something or take a picture with someone pretty regularly but just as quickly as I turn it on I turn it off and resume everyday life . An Ego can be a very important asset when you trying to build a brand or sell yourself there is no question about that you have to believe in yourself no matter what your doing weather it's writing books, screenplays, comics books, making music drawing, painting etc. ? I have an ego I admit that but I also control when my ego comes out and when to keep it locked away . Which begs the question when does an ego become more of a problem then an asset ? When your ego starts to take over your everyday life, when you start to take yourself too seriously and you start losing your grip on what's real and what's not . When you start to see yourself as a bigger part of things then you really are your ego needs to be checked. When you feel you are bigger then the world you live in you're ego needs to be checked .. I'm just a guy that is talented enough to write screenplays and has the balls to put his work out there for the world to see on film, I'm nothing special, I'm NOT the greatest screenwriter out there, I'm NOT the best film maker out there but I'm damn good at what I do I simply don't think the world revolves around me and what it is that I do .. I have a loyal fan base who knows who I am and I LOVE each and every fan I have because they are awesome and they make me feel like I've done something amazing again do I have an ego about it because I'm adored by thousands of people in Horror groups on Facebook and Thousands more who follow me on Twitter ?? No ego here because I know this an all end five minutes from now, tomorrow , a week from now or 20 years from now . I Cherish every moment I have doing my dream job and some people lose sight of where they came from quickly when they get a little (very little) fame ... No matter how successful I become, how many movies I make, DVD's I sell, autographs I sign I will remember STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY because I'm no better then anyone else in this industry and I KNOW THAT . They say fame is a monster and I guess some people can't tame the beast and become consumed with it, I'm thankfully not one of those people who can't tell the difference between their public persona and their everyday persona . That's sad and scary at the same time. I'm not talking about celebrities that make more money for making a movie , they have an ego and have earned the right to have one but do you think they have that ego 24/7 ? more then likely not, when they are at home with their friends and family they are just like you and I because they get that they can't be wild and crazy celebrities all the time . The people I'm talking about are small time folk that might have a few books under their belt or have been in a few small movies etc. and all of the sudden they are the BIGGEST thing in the world and I'm over here like "Really, you think because you one of MILLIONS of people who wrote a book and put it on Amazon you're something special or is it because you did a convention appearance and had a bunch of people talk to you that you think your a big deal now ? I have done the appearance thing and I sold 11 copies of my first movie on it's release date am I jumping around saying "Look at me I'm famous now" !! No I'm not because I'm not famous I'm just a guy trying to make movies and MONEY and FAME aren't my main motivation in all of this, I simply want to make movies for fans to enjoy, if they want me to sign a DVD for them great if not I honestly hope they enjoy the movie . In closing I just want to say that this blog isn't an attack it' simply meant to serve as a wake up call for those who might be leaning towards the wrong path as their fame grows, I know who I am and where I come from and will never forget those things as I start to release more films into the world and my stars starts burning brighter I will remain thankful for all the folks that have got me this far, my fans who continue to support me in everything I do because they know I'm just like them a fan at heart :)
STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) This blog IS NOT about the chain of clothing stores in malls across the country. What this blog is about is the current crop of films coming out in recent years and show no signs of stopping (for now) what I call "Hot Topic" films . Before I get started I want to make it clear as a die heard slasher fan I am NOT attacking these films or the folks that make them .. "Hot Topic" movies before I start off maybe I should define the term so you know what I mean so here it is ... "Hot Topic" Movie : Any movie that has Zombies, Ghosts, the Paranormal or Possession or Haunting as a plot line that is popular at the moment but will for whatever reason not have a long run at the top of horror .... By : Jamie Santamore As you know if you read my stuff or watch my videos that I LOVE Slasher movies :) I shoot my videos in my home office where the walls are covered with Horror autographs and other collectibles . So I thought it was a natural fit when I started Wicked Carnival Productions to start off with a slasher movie which quickly turned into a slasher trilogy . I get asked all the time why I love slashers so much and I answer this question the same way almost every time and I say "There are so many reasons I couldn't pick one or two to define why I love them" . With the latest crowdfunding campaign for Sins of Man II : Vengeance I created a slogan for Wicked Carnival Productions with the hashtag #MakeSlashersGreatAgain . Which may sound political but it's not the reason I like it is because it's catchy, I want fans to know that I plan to make Slasher movies they way they used to be made more scary, less predictable more suspenseful and frankly less cheesy and comical then the later installments of all the classic franchises . Lets talk about that for a moment, Halloween was awesome as was the sequel Halloween II sames goes for Friday The 13th and Friday The 13th Part 2 ANOES and ANOES 2 Freddy's Revenge were good Childs Play and Childs Play 2 . I think in most cases once you get through the first 2 films in a series you start to have issues with story and keeping things together. We all know what happened with Halloween III but Friday part III was good, ANOES 3 Dream Warriors was very well done and tied up loose ends nicely. Childs Play 3 was more or less about tying up loose ends before they went off the rails with Bride and Seed of Chucky (WTF was wrong with those films) . Note : I'm not saying that some of the later films weren't good I'm a huge Jason Lives (pt 6) fan ! as well as A New Nightmare (7th film in the series) and Halloween H20 (7th film in the series) This is something I want to avoid with the movies we release from Wicked Carnival Productions by limiting the number of sequels that we release from each series . While I'm a fan of trilogies I don't see everything from Wicked Carnival Productions being a three film series or beyond three films. I would like to do many one off films (a film that has no intended sequel and how I would do that is write a film that leaves no room for a sequel and tells a complete story with in it's run time . "Hot"Hot Topic" movies are movies that fill a desire by a group of fans the same can be said for Slasher movies but this is my blog so I'll write it the way I want too. I feel these film in recent years that seem to pop up out of no where like the PA films and the DOZENS of Paranormal TV shows and some of them are just a joke, the resurgence of the Zombie craze with the success of The Walking Dead . Movies about Haunting like The Conjuring and Insidious etc. These films I don't feel will stand the test of time like the classic slashers of our youth. Halloween is 38 years old and is played every year Friday The 13th is 36 years old and is still watched on Friday The 13th every time there is 13th on a Friday during the year . These "Hot Topic" movies make the same mistakes the slashers do and make too many sequels because the fans eat them up and when you make sequels for no other reason besides money you forget about the importance of storytelling and continuity . Now with that said even the best franchises out there have continuity issues Star Wars is a great example there are all kinds of issues with that franchise but I don't care because they tell an amazing story and I can over look the plot holes and some of the stuff that I might not understand because I don't read the comics or the books that happen between the films etc. "Hot Topic" movies have their place in the genre don't get me wrong just for the most part I don't watch them because I can't get into them and how much they ask you to believe, what I mean is I can't get past all the "slight of hand" that goes into a movie like Paranormal Activity it's 86 minutes of jump scares and not much else that movie cost $15,000 dollars to make and earned $193.4 MILLION DOLLARS which is an amazing draw I give them credit for that but lets jump forward 5 films in the series where they doubled the budget from 5 million from PA The Marked Ones to 10 Million for PA The Ghost Dimension and it was the worst performing film in the series thus far earning a mere 78.1 Million dollars, WAIT A MINUTE, you mean to tell me throwing money at it wasn't the answer, maybe they should've told a better story, just a thought . There was a drop in profits between PA 1 and PA 2 a bump with PA 3 then steady decline with 4, 5 and 6 in the series might be time to get off that sinking ship or you could save it with a SEVENTH film with a good story ! Note : I've never seen a ghost not saying weather I believe in them or not but I have never seen one and can't bring myself to watch a movie full of slight pf hand jump scares with slamming doors etc. Insidious is another franchise that thought throwing money into it would make a third film in the series better after earning a series high 161.9 MILLION with Insidious Chapter 2 on a budget of 5 Million the doubled the budget for Insidious Chapter 3 to 10 Million and earned 113 Million once again Money isn't always the answer Hollywood . Storytelling is just as important as money you put into the project or am I completely wrong here and all you want in a movie is jump scares and cheap tricks to make you scared ? Note : I don't believe in spirits or people being haunted because I have never experienced it so I can suspend disbelief to watch a movie about such things . Now I want to talk about horror groups on Facebook and I'm a member of many of them but I don't understand how you can have a group page like that were all you talk about all day everyday is OLD horror movies and you make no room to discuss new films from new film makers like myself ?? I LOVE the classic horror of our youth as much as the next person but I also know that new horror is just as important to the survival of the genre as much as the old movies we all know and love . Many of these groups ban any type of crowdfunding or promotional posts which to some one like me is bad. how are we supposed to engage with horror fans if we can't talk about out latest project and our campaign to get the project off the ground ??? the groups on Facebook are how film makers like myself build a fan base and group Admins cripple us before we even get started with the ban of promotional posts. So if I understand correctly you would rather have thousands of your members talk about the same movies and killers, characters and dumb ass who's your favorite this or that posts then have film makers bring you new films and characters to talk about again am I wrong here ?? I love all the classics I've said it a bunch of times but there's only so many times I can answer the same question posted in the same group before I start to get pissed off about it .... You want to know why I don't post random stupid posts your group, I'll tell you why it's because you have thousands of members who already do it and I don't want to clog the timeline with even more useless crap . Horror groups on Facebook SHOULD be to connect horror fans from across the globe and talk about New horror NOT be used to talk about all the old classic movies and the remakes and nothing new it doesn't make much sense when you think about it that way does it ? I join these groups because I want to reach horror fans on a global scale and interact with them but if I'm being 100% honest with you I simply don't have time to waste HOURS a day or week to talk about old movies, characters etc. when I'm trying to create new horror movies to bring to the world because for the most part these types of conversations are POINTLESS to a film maker like myself to continue to talk about the movies of the past without looking to the future of the genre I love... Note : I don't hate or look down on the members of these groups who post these types of info because all come from different walks of life and are all different places in life, I simply can't take the time to post the same things because I'm working to create New movies .. I very often will comment on a post to engage members in a constructive conversation . In closing I would like to say that I love horror movies and fans because I'm a fan myself this blog isn't meant to offend anyone I'm simply expressing my thoughts and opinions on these subjects . I'm a HORROR FAN first and foremost and a film maker second ..
Fans are the heart and soul of what we are doing here at Wicked Carnival Productions and I want you all to know that I love you for your support and I can't do this with out you :) STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) This is the first Wicked Carnival Productions stuff I've done since I lost my brother on Saturday morning I just want to take a moment to say the outpouring of support from not just friends and family but fans from across the globe is amazing THANK YOU SO MUCH :) Lets get back to business that is what my brother would want me to do . By : Jamie Santamore I like most horror fans collect autographs (while I collect different genres the only thing on display in my office is horror) How I started was kind of odd, I was surfing the web looking at Halloween pics and stuff like that when I stumbled on fanmail.biz which is a site that lists celebrities addresses either though the management or their current project . I saw that someone had received John Carpenter's autograph and I was intrigued . So I made the decision that I would go get some stamps and envelopes and give it a try . so I wrote a nice fan letter explaining to Mr. Carpenter how much Halloween effected me and still effects me all these years later and asked him to sign the enclosed DVD cover and return it in the pre stamped envelope enclosed and I sent it out not knowing if I just lost my Haloween DVD cover forever or if it would comeback signed . Fast forward 14 days my wife came in from getting out oldest son off the school bus and said you got something in the mail today. I opened it and it was my Halloween DVD case neatly signed by Mr. Carpenter and I was instantly hooked on the hobby.
The MAJORITY of my horror autographs have come at the cost of shipping while I have paid up to $30 dollars + shipping for some but in my defense it's Freddy Kruger himself Robert England so I paid the man for his signature . My BIGGEST sub collection in my horror collection might surprise many of the readers because you all know I LOVE Halloween but Halloween is #2 in my collect in terms of total number of pieces (13) and #1 is (Drum Roll) .............. Friday The 13th with a whopping 29 pieces !! I have a Sean S. Cunningham (the director of Friday The 13th, Ari Leiman (the first Jason) Betsy Palmer Adrienne King and many more :) Collecting autographs TTM (through the mail) is a great way to make getting the mail everyday more fun . and I think it's cool that most people are willing to sign for fans who might not be able to get to a convention a couple of states away (Not many come near Maine and travel is an issue for me . The longest I ever waited for a reply was 3 and a half years, I had sent a request to Danielle Harris (Halloween 4 & 5 as well as Rob Zombie's Halloween & H2) I figured it got lost in the mail or she never got it, or just never sent it back whatever more then the length of time I remember this because I got back Heather Langencamp the same day she sent me a sweet promo shot of her and Freddy (which is what I would later pay Mr. England to sign making it my only duel signed horror piece. I opened the envelope from Heather Langencamp first and was like "What the hell is this then" ? I open the envelope and I couldn't believe what I pulled out . both Halloween 4 / 5 duel pack and H2 signed nicely :) I thanked her on Twitter and she apologized about the delay which the delay was fine with me she's a very in demand actress . I have thought about posting pictures of my collection either in a blog or on a different section of the site, not sure if I will as with things happening so quickly and Sins of Man II : Vengeance kicking off shooting on May 1st I might not have time and once we get the movie shot then the promotional work starts :) we have a tour planned and are looking into a convention or two to get Wicked Carnival Productions out there :) Would you like to see pictures of my horror collection, let me know :) STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) We have all heard or used this expression before I use it often and it applies to film making in many ways and the most common way it applies is the way we write our scripts and create our characters and their stories People complain about there being too many of the same tropes in horror movies as well as the stereotypical characters well if it ain't broke don't fix it ... By : Jamie Santamore I get asked all the time why do you continue to have the same types of characters in your movies and use the same old tropes that they always fall into . (example : the car not starting or the group splitting up) Because it's how you tell the story, if the cars all started when the trouble starts the characters would simply drive away and they are no longer in danger, right? if they all stay together the killer can't pick them off one by one until he or she is alone with the final girl, right ? It's all part of the plan, you have to trust the process . The tropes are a needed evil in the world of horror . I like the tropes because they set up the story and change it at the drop of a dime, one minutes they have a plan to escape and get to safety and then BAM the car won't start, or the realize their locked in the house with a killer . As much as people preach that they want change in the genre if you stop using the tropes and the stereotypical characters fans might like it in the short term but then they would be looking for them to make a comeback shortly . You can't reinvent the wheel folks, it simply can't be done and why should it, seriously ... I want to change horror movies Yes but I think parts of the story telling are not only needed but if you cut them out you would change the genre too much . I had alot of stereotypical characters in Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis and I'm okay with that, they all had their place and they all worked well . I've said it a bunch of times when the actor who was to be the killer backed out of the film due to reasons beyond his control there was a panic about how it would all pan out and I decided that "Hey I can do this" I had no idea how wrong I was I'm not an actor, I'm a writer and a director so me being the genius that I am I decided to write a bigger part for myself in Sins of Man II : Vengeance it was a needed step to build the story towards the big finale in Part III. We start shooting on May 1st and I haven't even looked at the script other then at the table reads ... I might just wing it when I shoot my scenes because my character is alittle crazy anyway .. I guess what I'm trying to say is to everyone that doesn't like the tropes and the stereotypical characters and you complain about them there is a reason they have worked so well for so long, right ?? it's because they are a need tool in the structure and story telling that we all love. In Closing I would like to apologize to all of you for being A.W.O.L for a few days with everything happening so quickly in my personal life I have had to juggle many different and difficult situations and while I'm not "okay" I'm getting better with things, I have never felt the kind of pain that has come from losing my brother, while we weren't always close we were still brothers and while we might not have always "liked" each other we always LOVED each other because we were brothers . I have the memories to remember him as the amazing big brother he was, he was also a great father to my nephew Aiden . Sean, May the force be with you , Always .
STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) By : Jamie Santamore Due to the death of my brother I will not be posting a movie review this weekend I will try to make it up next week but I can't make any promises as myself and my family deal with the grief of our loss .
Shooting of Sins of Man II : Vengeance is still set to start on May 1st but I feel I need to step away from things while I deal with the grief of losing my only sibling . Thank you for understanding and your continued support . STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) I know alot of you are looking at the title of this blog and are wondering what it means and that's okay because I do think it's an odd title for a blog from a horror film company . I actually use the term "big problem vs little problem" more then you would think because it's a teaching point for my autistic children, specifically my oldest who will be 15 in August he has anxiety along with being on the "high functioning" side of the Autism Spectrum and with his anxiety comes panic over things that some are huge to anyone and others are small to others but he sees them as huge problems that can't be overcome, this is where the "is it a big problem or a little problem" comes in . The reason I'm telling you this is because when I'm on set working I suffered from what I call "on set anxiety" allow me to explain how this all ties together . By : Jamie Santamore We have finally after years of working on this process been able to convince my son that you can work trough anything weather it's a BIG problem such as a failed test or a little problem forgetting his laptop in his previous classroom . We have been having alot of breakthroughs with my son this year, he's a Freshmen in high school which I thought was going to be a tougher transition for him but it has gone relatively smooth . Like I said I have "on set" anxiety and what I call "office anxiety" as well and yesterday is a perfect example last night was the final table read for Sins of Man II : Vengeance which starts shooting on May 1st . and with in 3 hours of the read I had people telling me that they couldn't make it to the read and that made me anxious knowing that I would have to cover for them during the read which makes it hard to follow along and make notes as I was getting to the read one person text me telling me she was coming she was going to be late only to text me again as we are all waiting for her saying she wasn't coming. This sent me from panic to angry really quick I had no time to process what was happening at the time I just handed out the extra reading parts to the cast that was there and didn't even realize that I was solving the problem at them time because I couldn't process was it a big problem or a small problem... Less then half of the cast was at this read and now everyone had to pick up extra parts to read and they all did an amazing job with it and took it in stride . We had a special guest at the read as well he's a fellow writer / director by the name of Alan Dillingham he and Sheri Collins (Who plays Adrienne in Vengeance) are working together on the short film Doll House . Check out the Teaser here : It was very cool to get the thoughts of a fellow film maker on the pacing of the movie as well as the characters arcs which he said were both well and he called me a "visionary" which I take as a HUGE compliment . Getting back to Big problem, little problem I struggle with this in the moment and often it's due to having no time to process what's happening it's usually much later after the situation has past that I look at and realize that not only did I handle it but I didn't have to break it down . most things are little problems and if there are enough of them in a short amount of time they become ONE BIG PROBLEM, the trick is to skip the anxiety of it and just solve the problem without thinking about it too much, which for me more often then not is harder then it should be ..
We made it through last night and are now moving into the final script changes (all minor ones) then we start shooting on May 1st (Very excited to start we have some really cool things planned for this movie and I can't wait to bring you a more brutal, blood thirsty, violent Mortis who wants nothing but to slaughter as many people as possible. Mortis will be the monster that makes you check behind your door, check your closet and always carry a flashlight when you walk through a dark parking lot at night !! You know when you 15 year old Autistic son asks in the middle of YOUR breakdown "Is it a BIG problem or a little problem" that you have finally gotten through to him and it puts the issues at hand into perspective rather quickly . This is something I will keep in my bag of tricks on set when we kick of shooting of our second feature film Sins of Man II : Vengeance on May 1st !!! STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :) |
