John Carpenter's Halloween made in 1978 is my favorite film of ALL TIME in ANY GENRE and that says something because I have seen many of the old school classic films in other genres Casablanca, Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz just to name a few.
I love all the classics from 1960's Psycho to 1974's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 1978's Halloween, 1980's Friday The 13th, 1984's A Nightmare On Elm Street to the later films like 1988's Childs Play and 1996's Game changing film Scream .
However lately the films coming out are "hot Topic" films that's not an official term I just came up with it while writing this blog and these films along with the stream of remakes both in recent years and the ones to come have lead people to ask me the same questions almost on a daily basis more on that in a few minutes .
Another thing is Hollywood hasn't learned from the same mistakes they made during the 80's and that is the number of sequels nearly killed the genre completely until 1996 when scream came out and kicked Hollywood in the nuts and said screw you we aren't dead yet !
NOTE : a "Hot Topic" film is something that covers something that is hot right now such as the Paranormal or Zombies .
Here are the questions I get asked most often and the answers I usually give .....
Question #1 "When will Hollywood create something new and stop making remakes that destroy the originals" ?
The answer to this question is NEVER because weather you want to admit it or not we all go in droves to see the remakes of the classics and again weather you want to admit it or not that puts money in Hollywood's pockets and that is ALL they care about ... and weather they are actually destroying the originals of our beloved classic slashers or not is not their concern the MONEY is their only concern .
Film making in Hollywood is all about the money how much they spend to how much they make where as in Indie film making while money is a motivator it's not the main concern we make alot of "Passion projects" because we truly want to create films that will captivate the audience and will go broke ourselves trying to do it.
Question #2 "Why can't Hollywood ever make a movie that actually scares us anymore" ?
I'll answer this question with a question, Why should they try to go above and beyond what they do if we will go to the theater in record numbers to see a 90 minute filled with nothing but easy , inexpensive jump scares and the movie makes $100 MILLION dollars opening weekend ??
They will never try to out do themselves because they know we are a Loyal fan base who will sit through a series of movies that are basically the same 90 minute films for 3, 4 or even 5 films in a series so they don't feel the NEED to change how they do things .
Question #3 "What can Horror fans do to change how things are done" ?
The simple answer is STOP going to the theater in record numbers to see movies, that would change the culture in Hollywood very quickly. I haven't been to a theater to see a horror movie in 5 years the last horror movie I saw in the theater was Scre4m . I loved it !
If we continue to support the remakes and the occasional "Hot topic" horror movie . Hollywood will continue to rack in their MILLIONS of dollars and nothing will ever change because there is no NEED to change .
NOTE : Hollywood would rather deal with the devil they know then the Devil they don't know meaning they would rather continue to go to the well with the "Hot Topic" movies and the established franchises then risk millions of dollars on something new because it might not sell which I understand from a business stand point but as the old expression goes "You'll never know if you don't try" .
And while I have calmed down since moving from the fan section of the horror family to the film maker section of the horror family I'm still a fan first and want to see great films come out and that is what I'm trying to do with Wicked Carnival Productions and the slogan Make Slashers Great Again . Why do you spend your hard earned money to go to the movies and then bitch and complain about the movie online, I guess it doesn't make any sense to me.
Admittedly I watch the classic slashers repeatedly and older horror movies in general for the most part (although I did really like Star Wars : The Force Awakens) I watch the classics because they simply don't make movies like they used to, just because a movie has better effects DOES NOT mean it's a better movie. You can have all the best effects, CGI, Makeup FX in your movie but if there is not a good quality story to go with it most fans will see through all the flash and flare , with that said maybe I watch movies differently because I have been on the other side of the camera and been at the desk writing the movie but STORY is more important the special effects to me.
In Closing I encourage you to reach out to me and explain why you go to the movies and then complain on social media, blogs etc. if you notice on my movie review series I go out of my way to almost always give a positive review of the films I talk about because I know how hard it is to go from print to screen and make a movie so I don't trash films because while it's the easy thing to do and often times is seen as the "cool thing" to do I rise above all that and see the movie for what it is an achievement by the writer, director, cast and crew and even the studio because they finished their project for us the fans to enjoy .
Another thing I don't understand is why horror fans continue to shell there money out to see the movies that Hollywood puts out and don't support small indie films made for horror fans by horror fans who are simply trying to make the genre better and are so concerned with money and being famous ?? HELP ME UNDERSTAND THIS HORROR FAMILY ??
I'm trying to change the game and produce GREAT Slasher movies and have been asking practically begging for your support for over a year now and I can't seem to get my foot in the door ??
Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result so both the horror community worldwide and myself are insane because I'm continuing to ask for support from my fellow horror fans and it falls on deaf years while at the same time you are asking Hollywood to make new, fresh horror movies but then turn around and go see the latest "Hot Topic" film and / or the latest remake only to trash it on the internet after the fact kind dumb don't you think ? A change in our behavior will result in a change in their's .
If we STOP supporting all the "Hot Topic" movies and the remakes they will stop making them and give us fresh movies . It's easier said then done and like I stated earlier I am guilty of this too, I want to see the new Friday The 13th film, the New ANOES film the latest Texas Chainsaw flick and the now dead Halloween Returns but if we continue to support these types of films Hollywood will never make anything new ....
