There is nothing wrong with telling an old story in a new way as long as you don't change it too much from the original version, right ? Two of my favorite movies of all time are very close when you take a look at the story elements, those two movies John Carpenter's Halloween which came out in 1978 and Sean S. Cunningham's Friday The 13th which came out in 1980 .
Sean S. Cunningham has come out and said that without Halloween there would be no Friday The 13th it's basically the same story just changing a few of the pieces to make it your own .
Halloween in a way is about revenge as Michael is trying to kill his sister who in his eyes forgot about him when in reality she never knew him . ( I came to this conclusion due to the events of Halloween II 1981)
Friday The 13th is about a mother getting revenge for her son who drown due to the camp councilors bot watching him. ( Part 2 is about Jason getting revenge for his mother's death)
A Nightmare On Elm Street (ANOES) is about a man getting Revenge on the parents who took the law into their own hands they just used a Dream killer rather then a flesh and blood killer .
Child's Play is about a man getting revenge on his former partner and the cop who killed him .
Scream is about a teenage boy getting revenge on his girlfriend who's mother ruined his family by sleeping with his father .
Do you see a common word in all of these ?? REVENGE ! They are all very similar but make themselves seem different by changing some of the details .
Note : I'm very excited to see the next Friday The 13th film next year as well as the new Halloween movie (fingers crossed)
As a film maker I think the trick is to tell the old story in a different way to make it seem fresh, new and exciting and to do that you have to change the elements of the story and maybe the order of the events in the story to make the story your own .
Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis originally was very different then the version that was shot and released but do to limitations that were imposed on us through out the shoot things had to be changed to make the story work the best we could .
Sins of Man II : Vengeance was a similar situation but to a lesser degree we had to make changes due to issues with scheduling but what we came up with (very much) on the fly was better then what I had written originally and we wres able to come up with several creative ideas on set one that I'm really excited to show you folks that you don't see often in slasher movies, Stay Tuned for that !!
I don't get offended when someone says that I'm Old Fashioned or that I tell old fashioned stories because I do and I do it in a way that fans like and enjoy watching on film this thought is based on the number of DVD sales for Sins of Man : Rise of Mortis :)
I want to end this blog by saying THANK YOU to my worldwide fan base for all your support, you are making my dreams come true everyday . THANK YOU to my AMAZING CAST and CREW on the first two films you are all awesome at what you do ! and lastly I want to say THANK YOU to Chris Fyfe who has been with me since day one and never let me fall flat on my face when I've had a bad idea .
STAY HUMBLE, STAY HUNGRY MY FRIENDS :)
