I often sit in my office while working and wonder why people feel the need to become an arm chair critic of things they supposedly love and often things they can't stand . This blog will tackle these issues, hopefully.
I'm a huge fan of the Marvel and DC Universes on both TV and the big screen again I make no effort to hide this. Hell I got Netflix streaming service just to watch Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. I like most the DC and Marvel shows and movies. I like some more then others some I watch faster then others but on the other side of the coin I don't rush to this website to blog about everything wrong with the latest episode or movie.
I honestly don't see the point in complaining about these things. Does it mean I'm not a passionate fan if I don't make a 15 minute you tube video about how boring Iron Fist is each week? Am I less of a fan because I don't praise Daredevil each week? I don't think so but then again I could be wrong, that does happen from time to time.
II'll use wrestling as an example because it's the perfect example. I've been a wrestling fan since birth (I went to my first show at 2 months old) I grew up a WWF fan because I grew up in the Northeast United States. I discovered NWA/WCW in fall of 1991 after watching Scott Steiner VS Ric Flair for the NWA World Championship at Clash of the Champions. and became hooked on it after watching that match. Since the fall of WCW. Impact Wrestling has popped up (I've never missed a show in almost 15 years) along with Ring of Honor (I watch every TV and PPV) and several other big players in the business I watch as much wrestling as I can I love it. No I don't agree with everything they do but I'm a fan so I support it.
So I've been a wrestling fan for 38 years I've been through the Rock & Wrestling Connection (80's) The Gimmick era of the early 90's the Attitude Era / Monday Night Wars of the late 90's all the way through to present day. Do I always like what happens in the juggernaut World Wrestling Entertainment every week, God no! Do I tune in each and every Monday Nigh ? Yes I do. I never miss wrestling if it's on I watch it. I love the storytelling, the in ring action is the number one reason I watch the story lines drama is crap 90 percent of the time for me but it's part of the product now so I have to deal with it. I don't become a keyboard warrior and take about how they need to push this guy or that guy or talk at length how much I hate John Cena because I find it's pointless. Cena like him or not puts an ass every 18 inches and sells s shit ton of t-shirts, hats, poster etc.
Of all the people I grew up with and wrestled with during my teenage years I'm the only one who still watches wrestling today, I don't know why that is but it is. Not many people in my circle of friends watch the Marvel / DC Universes either but I follow the beat of my own drum. Agents of SHIELD is a show that I love to watch but honestly this season has really been hard for me to watch because it's allover the place but I enjoy the show for what it and all TV is supposed to be an escape from the everyday grind.
People complain about Iron Fist and said "I didn't need to waste my time watching it." While I was watching Daredevil I decided that I would watch Jessica Jones then Luke Cage and then Iron Fist. I knew they had crossover characters so I would make sense to watch them all. Luke Cage and Iron Fist get the most hate and I really can't see why.
NOTE : I'm not a comic book fan I haven't read comics since I was a kid so I look at the Marvel / DC Universes as a novice fan not a die hard Comic book fan.
Daredevil is something special to me so I knew I would enjoy the show. I started watching it and I loved it right away. and Vincent D'onofrio as Wilson FIsk was an amazing performance! I didn't know a single thing about Jessica Jones when I started watching it after Daredevil. I really enjoyed the character development through out the season. that show introduced me to Luke Cage so I decided to watch Luke Cage and I enjoyed that show for the most part. then I started to hear people trashing Iron Fist with comments like "Marvel dropped the ball." and this made the idea of watching Iron Fist more appealing to me I wanted to see what the big deal was. I watched Iron Fist in 3 days. Daredevil took me 2 weeks, Jessica Jones took 3 weeks and Luke Cage I watched in 2 and a half weeks. I couldn't see what everyone was whining about with Iron Fist... Can anyone out there explain it to me??
Now many of you reading this will say "Do you become a critic?" and yes I do I just don't put my critics hat on and jump on social media each and every week to complain about what happened on Gotham, Shield, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow etc. because there is enough of you out there doing that.
I did the Maine Morgue Podcast and did alot of that same stuff and I didn't like myself very much after the tapiong of each show and I stopped doing the show all together. I would like to pick up the show again but I'm not sure what I would talk about so for now until I figure it out the show will remain on the shelf.
There are movies I love and movies I don't but I can't sit here and tell another film maker what they are doing right or wrong and I refuse to do that because I know how hard it is to get a project of the ground and out into the world. I'm about to start working on my 3rd project in as many years and it seems with each project there are pitfalls and issues and that is something I as an artist have had to learn to deal with and I get better with it each time.
Why become a critic in a public format if you have never been in the other persons shoes? Just a question. Like I said I don't enjoy every minute of every single show I watch and they are hard to watch at times (I'm looking at you Agents of SHIELD) but I also am smart enough to not jump online and become a keyboard warrior.
With all of that said if this is how you get your anger and stress out then all the more power to you, I can't be bothered enough to do this. I'll do a set of Tai Chi or a DDP Yoga workout and go through a few Escrima Stick Work outs to get rid of my stress. I don't look down my nose at critics or keyboard warriors I simply don't have the time or energy to become one every single time one of my favorite shows does something I disagree with.
I hope you have enjoyed this blog as always these are simply my thoughts and opinions.
