Think about it back in the day we had the universal monsters the classics Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Creature From The Black Lagoon and The Invisible Man then you move to the late 70's and early 80's and you had MIchael, Jason, Freddy and Leatherface.
While there is a difference between the two groups they also have alot of the same traits to their stories. I believe The modern "Slasher" films like Halloween and Friday The 13th specifically really bring the movie monster to a different place.
Take a film like Jeepers Creepers (2001) the Creeper is a great character with a backstory that isn't really told through the movie its not until the sequel Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003) that they really get into the story of the creeper. I think that was brilliant by the writer / director Victor Salva to do that.
I dare say that VIctor Salva and his commentary on the Jeepers Creepers DVD(s) is what inspired me to write a monster movie as well as my love of the sub genre.
The title of this blog is What makes a good movie Monster. I like a good story, a monster that is a mystery as well as characters that have no clue what the Monster is.
I do like that Slasher films often make a human being into a monster with (in most cases) no clear reason why they kill. I think setting is just as important as the monster itself. You couldn't have The Creeper running around Manhattan like you did Jason, The Creeper has his hunting ground and has been doing this for many lifetimes.
MIchael terrorizes Haddonfield, Jason has Crystal Lake, Freddy has Elm Street and the stories are great because they work. Jason Takes Manhattan works (sort of) and I like that they tried to do something (alittle) different with the series.
I think Monster movies work on many levels and I like that every monster has their world that they live in, I don't think every monster movie has to have some political message intertwined into the story but some are and that's fine it drives the plot forward and gives a reason for the monster to exist, they didn't do that with the Creeper, he is just kind of there. Supposedly we will find out more about the Creeper and where he came from in the upcoming Jeepers Creepers 3 Cathedral (due out in 2016) SWe'll have to wait and see..
