I pay respect to film makers, writer, horror locations, characters, places, actors, and actresses in the script for Sins of Man Rise of Mortis and many of them made it into the final cut of the film.
Here is why I did it, it wasn't because I couldn't think of my own names, places etc. it was because these people , places and things have influenced me as a person, writer and film maker.
I think it's important to show respect to those that came before you in any line of work and in film it's commonly done to make reference to these things. at one point I believe there were 90 references to not only horror themes but several movie and TV references as well.
NOT to SPOIL anything but there are references to Halloween, Friday The 13th, ANOES, Childs Play, Scream, The Avengers, Terminator, Die Hard, Criminal Minds and Stephen King in the script and most of them made it into the movie.
Again this wasn't done because I wanted the writing to be easy so I ripped off anything from these films and TV shows I wanted to convey to the audience that not only am I a horror movie maker but I'm a fan just like all of you. I even went so far as to give credit to the writers and directors who have inspired me or helped me along the way in the final credits of the film.
Now I want to talk about having an eye on the future of horror movies. I believe that having an eye on the past of horror and paying respect to those who have shaped me as a writer / movie maker is just as important has having an eye on the future of horror.
I think the future of horror is bright and can be something very special however with that said I think the future is with indie films like Sins of Man Rise of Mortis (The Sins of Man Trilogy) and other indie films. I have said it many times if horror fans want CHANGE in the culture in Hollywood and get new movies out. I think Indie film is the way to go, Hollywood studios care about MONEY not weather fans are happy a few shinning examples
ANOES
Bride of Chucky
Seed of Chucky
Halloween Resurrection
Jason Goes To Hell
These films were okay but they were cash cows for the studios because they knew fans would go see them. Personally I didn't see any of these films in theaters but many people did because horror fans are LOYAL. (the most loyal fans of any genre)
Indie film makers (Unless they are backed by a ton of money) simply want to make movies that fans will enjoy because most Indie film makers are fans first. yes money is important to the growth of our business and our ability to make more films but we care more about the product we are putting out in terms of wanting to mke the audience happy and keep them coming back for our next release. Hollywood wants your money and your happiness isn't important after they have your money.
I have stated many times that I encourage fans to e-mail, tweet, facebook me after Sins of Man Rise of Mortis comes out ( I know it's not a perfect movie) to complain or send a compliment etc. I WANT to hear from fans to tell me what you liked about it or didn't like about it because I know a lot of mistakes were made but I also now I learned a lot and will do a 100 % better on Sins of Man II in April I have already started working on the bloody effects and gore for a more violent film for you blood thirsty rabid horror fans.
IN CLOSING I want fans to know that I LOVE horror movies and as long as I'm having fun writing, directing, producing, acting and doing makeup FX I will continue to make movies for horror fans to love / hate.
